I build production systems and lead the teams that ship them.
Senior Manager of Federal Tax Development at Taxwell, leading a 28-person organization across TaxAct & Drake Tax. 15 years turning complex tax regulations into reliable software — now building AI-powered developer tooling that changes how teams work.
I'm a technical leader who thrives at the intersection of complex systems and real human impact. I don't just manage — I build.
Growing up in Dubuque, Iowa, I learned the value of hard work early — excelling in tennis at Hempstead High School, then earning dual degrees in Accounting and Finance at the University of Iowa. Working through college in restaurants taught me how to handle pressure, read people, and stay calm when things go sideways.
My career started in the TaxAct call center during the 2008 financial crisis — answering calls from people genuinely struggling. That experience shaped everything. I discovered that the technical side of tax software, mixed with real problem-solving, was exactly where I belonged. I could architect systems and understand the human beings they serve.
I moved quickly — Tax Analyst I, II, Senior, Principal — then relocated with my family to Northern Virginia when my wife Emily received a great opportunity. I became one of TaxAct's first fully remote employees, later helping pave the way for the company's smooth transition to remote work during COVID. When Cinven acquired TaxAct and Drake Tax, I stepped into management to tackle the challenge of merging two very different tax software companies into one.
"I enjoy figuring out things that seem near impossible."
15 years of building, shipping, and leading in tax technology
Leading a 28-person cross-functional organization responsible for 100+ federal tax forms across two codebases, two product families, and a multi-year engine consolidation initiative.
Consolidated two separate tax departments into one team. Built the career ladder, wrote job descriptions, created development plans. Promoted a senior analyst to manager.
Built a code intelligence platform indexing 63 repos into a 2 GB knowledge graph with 37+ MCP tools — 83 commits in 6 days. Created a 150-file AI documentation system that eliminated LLM fabrication of proprietary DSL syntax.
Built 6 production Power BI dashboards from scratch. Drove SLA breach rate from ~38% to ~5.6%. Designed 7 Power Automate flows for automated triage and reporting.
Led the strategic analysis for PowerBASIC-to-MathMaster DSL engine consolidation. Personally converted 9+ complex IRS forms. Fixed a Form 2441 bug affecting ~3,000 returns with up to $700/return in missed credits.
12-year progression from individual contributor to senior technical expert across all TaxAct product lines.
Started part-time in the call center during the 2008 financial crisis while completing my Master's. Learned how to handle difficult situations, communicate with frustrated taxpayers, and understand the real problems people face. Accepted a full-time role as Tax Analyst I after graduating — and never looked back.
IRS-certified volunteer preparing income tax returns for lower-income taxpayers. Helped return over $3 million to the community.
A selection of production systems, platforms, and tools I've designed and built
Full-stack codebase intelligence platform built in 6 days. Indexes 63 repositories, 660K+ calculations, and 1.5M+ cross-references into a 2 GB SQLite knowledge graph. Exposes 37+ tools via Model Context Protocol for AI-assisted development.
150-file documentation system that eliminated LLM fabrication of proprietary DSL syntax. Includes compiler-extracted token validation, 16 automated checks, and a fabrication linter running in CI. 5-layer context architecture with 25+ reference docs, 8 rule files, and 11 custom Claude Code skills.
6 production Power BI dashboards replacing manual spreadsheet processes with real-time self-service reporting. HappyFox ticket analytics, ADO work item tracking, ATS/e-file approval monitoring. Advanced DAX measures, Python visuals, and incremental refresh across multiple data sources.
7 Power Automate flows including: AI-generated daily ticket recaps posted to Teams, critical ticket triage scoring (1-10 severity with adaptive cards), Outlook email classification and routing, and build failure monitoring. AI Builder GPT integration for intelligent automation.
Polished document comparison tool for IRS tax forms with semantic diff modes (Facing Pages and Highlighted Documents), watermark removal, pre-processing controls, and defensive UI with watchdog timers. Reduced "find the differences" time by 70-95%.
Home Assistant deployment on Raspberry Pi with Govee lighting, robot vacuums, SmartThings integration, and AirTag tracking. Custom pergola louver automation using linear actuators. OpenClaw AI agent platform with hardened security. Tailscale mesh VPN for secure remote access.
Taylor doesn't just manage — he builds alongside his team. When we needed a way to trace calculation chains across 63 repositories, most leaders would have hired a vendor. Taylor built the entire code intelligence platform himself in less than a week. That's not normal.
I've worked with a lot of managers who talk about data-driven decision making. Taylor is one of the few who actually does it. He replaced every manual spreadsheet with a real-time dashboard, and suddenly we could see problems before they became crises.
Merging the TaxAct and Drake federal teams could have been a disaster. Taylor made it work by being genuinely transparent about the hard decisions and making sure everyone felt heard. He handled the people side just as well as the technical side.
I'm looking for a Director or VP-level role where I can combine deep regulated-industry expertise with hands-on technical leadership.
Leading engineering, platform, or product teams at a company where technical depth matters. I want to build systems, not just manage roadmaps. Director of Engineering, VP of Platform, Head of Tax Technology — the title matters less than the work.
A company solving hard problems in fintech, tax tech, regulatory compliance, healthcare, or enterprise SaaS. Ideally one that's serious about AI adoption and needs someone who's already built production AI tooling — not just talked about it.
A team that values builders, rewards initiative, and doesn't confuse process with progress. Remote or hybrid in the DC metro area. I thrive in environments where I can ship real things and see the impact.
15 years in a complex regulated industry, a track record of building production systems that scale, experience leading 28+ people through a multi-year platform migration, and a genuine obsession with making teams better through tooling and automation.
I'm looking for a Director or VP-level role where I can pair deep regulated-industry expertise with hands-on technical leadership to drive platform modernization and AI adoption at scale.
Whether you're building something ambitious in fintech, tax tech, regulatory compliance, or enterprise AI — I'd love to talk.
